Thought of the day

When having an causal discussion.
Why is it common place to quote someone with credentials that had or has the same option as yourself?

Removing science and math from the conversation, or any absolute proven truth, not that there are many, why can't a statement be analyzed by its own merit if it’s a personal opinion or social commentary. Without stating "and in the words of", for we all know if one expert says one thing you can easily find another that says the opposite.

partly? it could be showing off. could just be the desire to demonstrate a collective wisdom emerging on a topic. it's like thomas aquinas said... and rainer maria rilke often alluded to this in his poetry... The Baghavad Gita teaches...

see? that was showing off.

It demonstrates and educated mind.
Intimidating to all who may challenge. Now, an origanal thought, would this not be a demonstation of "truer" wisdom.
Not that I believe I have ever had one. Or in the words of G. K. Chesterton, "Detached intellectualism is ( in the exact sense of a popular phrase ) all moonshine; for it is light without heat, and it is secondary light, reflected from a dead world"

check, the move is yours.

yeah, there's definitely some truth to that. interesting that even you have now quoted some perceived expert. being educated means you know a lot of stuff. wisdom is when you can actually do something with it to improve the quality of your life or the world around you.

(digress: I hate it when you're reading something but the author doesn't take the time to actually say the point he's trying to make but just constructs quotes into a linear flow.)

like I said before, sometimes you just want to demonstrate that you're not the only one who thinks what you do, that you have backup. But at times, when it's not excessive or obnoxious, quoting the words of a mystic or philosopher and demonstrating the praxis in your life is how you can Teach some wisdom that you've really seen work. It isn't necessarily showiness. It's like quoting the bible, or siddhartha or any other scriptures or the 7 habits of highly effective people.

No argument here except many not all, quotes are from uneducated people.
The bible for example, most had little education, (disregarding the inspired by god thing for a moment). Besides in many cases just because someone publish a quote or book. Who is to know if they were the first to come up with the idea. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.
But, was he the first to think of it, design it, or make it work, or patent it. And if he hadn't how long until someone did. But for ever in history he will be call THE GREAT Alexander Graham Bell.
